Choices

I often wonder how I ended up at university. The route I took and the experiences I went through. One particular quote that resonates with me lately is by author Gareth Nix: “Does the walker choose the path, or the path the walker?”. It really got me thinking of the moments in my life that defined my path. Particularly on the five hour coach ride I often take back to London from university.

Whenever I need to get away, I visit Mount Edgecumbe. I take the Cremyll ferry across as it’s just over a pound for a single adult ticket. I always sit outside on the deck of the ferry, whatever the weather. Enjoying the sound of the choppy waters and the occasional splash of water, I feel instantly calm by the time I arrive at Mount Edgecumbe. I usually wander through endless woodland or head straight to the stony beach. It’s as if the ferry transports me away from my responsibilities for a few hours. I could sit on the beach for hours, thinking about life and breathing in the fresh air. Being surrounded by woodland and silence allows me to think and rationalize my thoughts.  It truly is a beautiful place to visit.

On reflection, I’m aware that all the challenges I have experienced, since I’ve been at university, will only shape me for the better. The difficulties you encounter in your life will no doubt help shape you as a person. It provides experience and gives you knowledge on how to deal with a particular situation, shall it ever arise again in the future.

Did I make the right choice in going to University? It doesn’t feel like it now, but ultimately I know I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.

  1. Clarity is often the virtue of deep thoughts and thinkers. As long you think and then make your choices there is less risk involved in those decisions. But yes I do agree, it is our choices that define us, but how and when we made those choices describe our past selves. So when we wonder upon our past choices it feels like revisiting our old selves! Isn’t it?

  2. For me choice lies not so much in what I do, but how I experience what I do.

You choose to resonate with the words of Gareth Nix, think of the moments in your life, need to get away, enjoy the sound of the choppy waters, feel instantly calm etc.

It sound to me like you have chosen to live in harmony with what you have experienced so far and if I were to make a guess it would be that you will continue to do so. You will resonate with life at university, think about the challenges of the workplace, need to have stimulating company, enjoy the sounds of loved ones in your life and feel instantly calm when you listen to the sound of your breathing.

So move the tides of our lives. Not living for the world but allowing the world to entertain us on our journey through.

Hope you’re enjoying your day, Katie.

Regards – Robert (who knows the experience of the ferry from a trip to Iona last week and still felt the room sway comfortingly when he returned home to York).
